What is Counselling?

What is counselling? It might be easier to tell you what counselling isn’t:
– It’s not about giving advice or telling you what you should do.
– It’s not about me being an expert who will “fix” you.
What it is about is providing you with a safe, nurturing environment in which you can be you, without fear or favour.

Counselling revolves around the relationship between the counsellor and the client, with the aim of enabling the client to make sense out of confusing and turbulent thoughts and feelings. You may want to see a counsellor because you are not able to deal with a current situation. Maybe issues from your past are affecting the way you are living your life today. Whatever the reason, I will do my best to help you see your problems more clearly, making it easier to decide on a path to follow.

Our relationship will be one of equality, honesty and free of judgement. You may want to access counselling for a short period of time (6-8 weeks) or for a longer course of therapy. We will meet regularly (usually for 50 minutes a week) and you will be given the time and space to explore things that are important to you.
